Oreo Got Hurt

She is OK and that is the most important thing. We are not sure exactly what she did to herself but she started limping Monday night. I checked her paw to make sure there was nothing in it. Hubby and I decided to block the stairs and have her sleep on the first floor. She usually sleeps in our room. Hubby brought down her bed to the living room. In the middle of the night she did a loud yelp. You have to step on her for her to yelp so it was very strange. Hubby and I flew down the stairs to check on her. She was in pain and didn't want to put her foot down. We got her to lay down and I got ice on her leg. I wasn't sure if it was her paw, leg or shoulder. She finally went back to sleep and I did too.

YD is the first to get up and I heard her walking around. 2 minutes later Oreo let out another huge yelp. I ran down the stairs and she was in the kitchen. She had an accident on the floor and wanted to go outside. We have one little step out the back door and she had no problem getting out. She didn't want to come back in. I went out in my PJs to check her out again. At this point I'm thinking that when she is getting up is when she is yelping. I get YD off to school promising I will text her as soon as I know anything about Oreo. I call the vet and they will be open in an hour and a half. I fed Oreo (she ate no problem) and took a quick shower. Hubby then got in and we were at the vet when they opened at 8 am. I explained everything to the guy at the front and he said to have a seat.

The vet apparently doesn't arrive until 8:30 ( I didn't know that ). We went in and he checked her out. He said it is her front right shoulder. He thinks soft tissue damage. She will walk on it after being up for a little while so he said it couldn't be broken. They gave her a shot of pain medicine, did a blood test and a urine test and prescribed an anti-inflammatory. $388 dollars later we went home.

She was a nut the rest of the day. She is not allowed stairs, go on walks or to run for a week. Good luck with that. The medicine made her very antsy. She kept moaning all day. Late afternoon I called the vet because she was so off. They said it was a side effect. She went to bed and was much better Wednesday. She does still yelp if she sleeps on that side. I keep turning her over whenever she sleeps on her right side. It is a losing battle.

Thursday morning I got a call from the vet. They think she has a UTI. Come get an antibiotic. Another $44. She is on both meds for a week. If she is still having leg problems when she finishes the anti-inflammatory I am to call the vet. I set up an appointment for a month (I thought that was kind of far off) for them to see if the UTI is gone. She is doing much better and doesn't understand why she can't go up stairs or on a walk. Sorry puppy girl, talk to the vet. Sometimes I wish dogs could talk, I wouldn't have been so stressed out.

  1. Oh, how sad for your sweet Oreo. I hope both medicines work and clear up her shoulder and UTI. Our sweet pets are just like family.

  2. Poor Oreo and poor Mama, It so hard when the furbabies are not 100% and that they can't tell us what's wrong. Hope Oreo feels right as rain soon

  4. Oh poor baby Oreo I hope she is doing much better now and the antibiotics and anti inflammatories work on her quickly to ease the pain and discomfort.

It is hard keeping really active dogs calm when they are hurt.

    1. Thank you. She thinks she is punished because she isn't allowed upstairs. She is doing better every day. The week will be over soon and she will be back to her old self.

  6. I hope she feels better soon. Your vet bill is much higher than it would be at my vet. Oklahoma has a lower cost of living on most everything, and wages in general are also lower here so I guess that evens out.

  7. OH NO!!!! That poor baby, and poor Mom. I so hope she's on the mend quickly. Pet stress is so similar to being stressed out when a baby isn't feeling well. It's so hard to figure out what's wrong- I know whenever my cats even vaguely meow in an abnormal manner, my stomach starts churning and I'm a wreck. Give Oreo a gentle pet for me!!!

  8. Being a dog lover, I hate to see one in pain. It is hard when they can't tell you what is wrong. I am impressed to see how you are taking care of Oreo with such gentleness and love. She is one lucky pooch.

  9. O know what that's all about, we recently had to send one our fur babies to doggy heaven and we had went through a lot with her. I am so happy your Oreo is doing so much better. Now our little guy Jordy has an ear infection, it never ends and it's hard to be frugal when the fur babies get sick. But for me money well spent.

    1. I'm so sorry for your loss. We lost our first dog and it was heartbreaking. Oreo is doing much better. I hope your Jordy gets better soon. Pets can be very expensive.
