I Have a Confession...

I am addicted to food shopping! There I said it. I love food shopping. I love matching coupons with sales. I love going through the clearance racks. I love checking every department to see what is marked down when all I needed is bread.

I went to Aldi for eggs. They are on sale for 96¢ a dozen this week. I also wanted to get some fruit and veggies. Aldi is on my way home from work so it isn't out of the way. I made the mistake of looking at the meat department. I saw lots of red mark down stickers. If you shop at Aldi, you know them. They put them on the items that they want to get rid of soon. Well, the next thing I know, I am checking out with 32 pounds of ground beef.

Each pack had $7 off in coupons. They all were priced at a little over $13.

I got 35.27 pounds of ground beef for $38.36. That comes to $1.18 a pound. I couldn't help myself. I am supposed to be doing a $100 grocery challenge. That isn't going to happen, so I am going to try to stay under $150.

We are set for ground beef for a while. I divided the meat into 32 1 pound bags. I see lots of chili, tacos, pasta with meat sauce or meatballs in our future.

Do you have a grocery shopping addiction? Would you have bought the ground beef if you were me?

  1. You are not alone. Hi - I am Cheryl - a grocery shopping addict! LOL
That is why I haven't even walked into a store this month yet. You got a fantastic deal and it would have been silly to pass that up. That is money in the bank for the future.
I never find those meat deals at my Aldi. That is wonderful
    You rock!!!

    1. My Aldi has those stickers all the time. There were several other items that had them but the ground beef was the best deal. I called Hubby to check if it was OK to go over the grocery budget we had set. He told me for meat it was absolutely OK. At least we have a good addiction. I am so glad that I had room in the freezers from eating out of them the past 2 weeks. I am also addicted to chocolate but that is a story for a different day.

  2. I LOVE TO GROCERY SHOP, too. If I were going to buy beef, I would have bought it. I am allergic to beef, so I try not to use much. It is fun to see how cheap you can go with sales and coupons.

  3. Never walk away from a bargain that will indeed save $. You would have purchased 32# over time so why not!

  4. If I had room for it in the freezer, heck yeah I would have bought it all too!

  5. I am not a shopping addict, but when I go I check out every aisle and any item we might use for a sale price (which is why I currently have 10 jars of chopped pimentos) My favorite tore to browse is Trader Joe's. I can spend over an hour in the store and come out with the 4 things I went there to get, but I really do enjoy seeing it all.

  6. I most certainly would have bought that beef! Think of the rate of savings return on your investment by buying low now and eating when the price is high.

I tend to think in terms of serving rather than pounds. That would be 128 servings at about 30 cents per serving. Even less than that if its put into "stretcher" type meals.

  7. Well done on the ground beef, I would have bought it all at that price too if I needed to restock and had room in the meat freezer :) .

I wouldn't say I am addicted to food shopping but I certainly watch out for markdowns on products we will use at a cheaper price to save money like your above bargain.

We do shop once a month for our staples and do small top ups of fruit, veg and bread rolls in between. These times and when I do my larger shop we always do look at the discount meat, fruit and vegetable and bakery sections too. If there is something there we are low on and if it is in the budget we will buy it.

I keep a pantry stocking budget of $20 a fortnight and this is what I purchase our bargain groceries out of. If I don't spend it all I carry it over to the following fortnights and when I see a huge bargain I will use it.

Last week we found 4 x 6pk packets of hamburger and 1 x 6 pk of wholemeal bread rolls on markdowns as well as two bottles of shampoo saving $4.30 on usual prices.

    Have a fantastic week ahead.

  8. I HATE grocery shopping!!! My husband does the shopping with the help of my list. You can't even get near the price you paid for that ground beef here at Walmart for the 10 lb. rolls! You paid almost half of what we would have paid here. Miss our cattle - but we're too old to raise cows anymore!! Miss our hogs, chickens, ducks also. Home grown meat just doesn't compare to the store "stuff"!!

    1. No it doesn't. A friend has ducks and chickens and their eggs are amazing.

  9. I am not addicted to shopping, I even dislike it; however, I have learned to enjoy looking for good deals. It is like a treasure hunt to me and spurs me to get out of the car to go looking.
The meat was an awesome find!

  10. You are not alone. My husband is the same way. He gets all excited when he sees the 50%off sticker. Even though our freezer is full. My thing is butter. When I see it under 3$ I go nuts even when the freezer is full.

    1. Before Christmas Aldi had butter for $1.99 a pound limit 4. I was stopping on the way home from work everyday to get 4. I drive right past it. I understand.
