Homemade Pizza Dough

We love pizza! But we live on a budget. So getting takeout all of the time just doesn't work for us. Also, my family has food allergies. Add all of that together and you get homemade pizza. I have tried many different recipes for pizza dough. We have even gotten it from pizzerias and the supermarket. This is our favorite. It makes a 18 inch pie.

1 cup room temperature water
1 teaspoon honey
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 Tablespoon olive oil
3 cups of flour
1 3/4 teaspoons active yeast

I run it on the dough cycle in my Cuisinart bread machine. I pull it out to rise and let it sit for at least an hour. I put a  little oil in the bottom of a glass bowl that I cover with a towel. I have occasionally left it in the bread pan to rise but since I usually make 2 I just pull them out. If you want individual pizzas, cut the dough in half before you let it rise.

We have a stone for our oven but in the Summer we use it on the BBQ. We make pizza sauce with my homegrown tomatoes. There are endless possibilities for homemade pizzas. Here are some that we have made:

-cheese with garlic and oregano
-cheese with peperoni
-cheese with meatballs
-cheese with grilled chicken
-chicken bruschetta
-chicken with broccoli rabe and garlic
-sausage with broccoli rabe and garlic
-veggie
-meat lovers
-veggie with meat

Do you make your own pizza dough? What do you like on your homemade pizza? Be daring and try something new on your pizza tonight.

  1. I’ve been making homemade dough for years, it’s frugal and a family favorite. We put Homemade sauce, grated mozzarella and toppings might be pepperoni, diced ham, cooked sausage, onions, bell and jalapeƱo peppers and husband is a big fan of green olives on his.
Now that we are empty nesters, we do eat frozen pizza occasionally though.

    1. My husband enjoys green olives too. Pizza is a family favorite here too. We always make extra because it is such an easy lunch for the next day.

  2. It's a lot harder and more expensive to make gluten-free pizza crust, which is what I need to have. So, we often buy the frozen ones from Costco for me, and I put extra toppings on them. For the family, the teens usually go buy those $5 pizzas from Little Ceasars, and they eat that. Since they pay for it, it's really a money saver for me:)

    1. GF would make it a lot harder to make at home. I know a friend that is GF and she gets her pizza from Whole Foods. My son likes to get Domino's with his friends as they are cheap like Little Ceasars.

  3. Homemade pizza is the best!!! I love your ideas for toppings. One of my favorites, that is a bit unconventional, is using some ranch dressing instead of tomato sauce and then putting cooked chicken chunks, green onions, fresh diced tomatoes and mozzarella cheese on it. So good!

    1. Sounds yummy. I will have to give it a try. My son eats almost anything and he loves ranch dressing.
