Adding to my Pantry

When we were visiting our oldest daughter we went to her local super market. I always check clearance racks and we sure did find some goodies this time. Easter candy was marked down and everyone wanted some. Chocolate bunnies 25 cents each, chocolate peeps 25 cents, regular peeps 50 cents, and dove chocolate bags $1 each. Some of it didn't make it into the picture. We also found Daiya cheese sauce that we use fore Hubby. He is allergic to dairy. They were $3 a box and each box had 3 cheese packs. There were 8 boxes and we took them all. We usually get a box of their mac n cheese for $5 a box. It has 7 oz. of pasta and 1 cheese pouch. I can make it for much cheaper with on sale pasta. We had looked online to buy the cheese packs but they were only sold by the case for over $70 for 8 boxes.  That is a lot to lay out for mac n cheese. Hubby would only have it every once in a while as a special treat so he is very excited that he can have it more now. Our total was $30.36. I did by OD some stuff but didn't count it in our grocery budget. It came out of the vacation fund.

On Monday, I ran to Aldi to get some things. I am finally out of potatoes from when I bought 100 pounds last October. They were an okay price at 10 pounds for $3.99. Brussel sprouts were on sale $1.29 a pound so I grabbed 3. English muffins were on sale 69 cents. We just opened our last box of kitchen garbage bags so I bought another box. We drank a bunch of ginger ale while away so I picked up another 12 pack. Otherwise everything was dairy, fruits, or  veggies.  I spent $41.32. Still no marked down hams though.

I went to BJ's today for a few things. I got 6 heads of romaine lettuce, cheddar, whipped cream and a wedding card. I did return a ton of bottles/cans that I had been collecting so I only spent $14.68. We have been eating a lot of salads since I am trying to lose weight. I cannot wait for my garden to get going because I hate buying lettuce. The cheese I will shred and divide into baggies and freeze.

I went to Stop & Shop next. They had canned beans, pasta, and chips on sale and I wanted to get some. I am trying to build my pantry up to a 6 month supply. I also want things that are easier to cook, like canned beans in case of an emergency.  I got 14 pounds of pasta at 69 cents a piece. That is a really good price where I live. I always make sure that I get the boxes with a full pound. Some of the boxes now are 12 oz. for the same price.

I got 12 cans of beans. They were on sale 2 for $1 which is a good price for canned beans.

The chips were 2 for $5. We don't eat a lot of chips but it is nice to have sometimes. These are Hubby's favorite.

I then hit the clearance sections. Unfortunately there were no good meat or produce marked down. But I did find some good stuff in the pantry section. First up is oil.

3 gallons of frying oil marked down to $6.75. It was heavy but I threw that thing in my cart so fast I almost hurt myself. There were 2 other ladies looking at the markdowns and I was not losing that.

Then I found this salad dressing and I figured I would try it for 79 cents. The 2 hot sauces are for Hubby and son.

I also grabbed the Friday freebie which was yogurt. My total for Stop & Shop was $34. All of it, except the yogurt and dressing, went right into my pantry.

On the way home I ran into Meat Farms to look at marked down produce. It was a bust. However they did have cold cut ends so I grabbed a bag of them.  I cut them up and through them into salads or eat them with cheese and crackers. You really can't get cold cuts cheaper then this. The bags are mixed so you usually get a little of everything. I did grab a few other things too. My total was $9.89

My total for the week is $130.25. I am happy with that amount as I did buy a bunch of stuff for the pantry. I budget $400 a month and I have plenty of surplus right now since we did a pantry challenge in January. The weather is getting nicer so before I know it I will have lots of fresh fruits and veggies from my yard. I can't wait.

How did you do this week? Find any good sales or specials? Did you add anything to your pantry? Even adding 1 or 2 things every week makes a difference. If you buy 2 extra items each week, you will have over 100 by the end of the year.

  1. I have not been to the store this week. I will tomorrow because I see a few things in the grocery ads that came today. You really go some good deals this week.

  2. Hi MCOIA and you did so well and the pasta and beans all come in handy and are great staples to stock your pantry with and we will be working gradually to building up on dried and tinned beans here too shortly. Chocolate well all I can say is yum and hoping we might come up with some specials here on that if we hunt for them. I can just picture you weight lifting the 3 gallons of fry oil into your trolley with gusto and enthusiasm and a really good pick up too. Probably it was still there because other ladies wouldn't have been able to pick it up :) , ahh got to love our determination.

We only go grocery shopping once every 2 months (next grocery shop is the 17th of April), unless we find extra good specials in between and classify our medical, garden vegetable growing as well as clothing and homewares or equipment purchases as part of our pantry or preparedness too. We just encompass the whole household needs in there.

This week we have stocked up on -

    - A new medical back brace for DH as he has lost lots of weight and we needed a smaller size. We went into the local building hardware store and found one there and it was the last one in his size but was not in the packaging so, never missing an opportunity for a discount, asked for a discount and got $5 off the shelf price. These were $78 in other places and we got ours for $36.50 so I suppose you could say that was a saving of $41.50 all up.
    - We got another bulk script for DH's pain medications in which we can get a months worth for the same price as buying 1 box saving another $70.40 there.
    - We planted 62 broad bean seeds saved from our previous crop in the gardens as it is now getting cooler here. This saved us yet another $4.65 over purchasing the seeds for the same amount.

We are happy with our week and are gearing up for a rental inspection so we are now spring cleaning everything. So far the sewing and craft room sparkles and looks far more organised than it was.

    1. It never hurts to ask for a discount. The worst that could happen is they say no. That is a great price for the back brace. Glad you were able to save so much on the pain meds. I cannot wait until I get to plant my garden. I am really hoping to plant my snap peas this weekend. They are usually in by now but with all of this crazy weather we have been having I don't want to plant them and then have them not grow.

I do believe that shopping sales, checking clearance racks and always being on the lookout for the best price does take a lot of determination. We would do anything for our families. A 3 gallon jug isn't going to stop me. I hope you find wonderful bargains. They always make me happy.

  3. Our Aldi's did not have any hams left after Easter. Disappointing, was hoping to get a couple for the freezer.

    1. I didn't find any either. Memorial Day is right around the corner so I will be stocking up on condiments, ground beef and hotdogs.

  4. What a good stock up! You have to strike when you see it. I am often surprised it is when I dont expect! I keep an emergency fund for these times as it would be awful to miss out! Every opportunity to get ahead is good! xxx

    1. I never seem to find what I am looking for but that is OK. I have been looking for clearance hams. Haven't found any but I did find turkeys. That works for me. I roll over any extra $ from groceries every month. I did a pantry challenge in January so I have a lot of money in reserves. I seems to even out over the year. I would hate to miss out on a great deal because I didn't have the money.
