My Frugal List: Week of May 14. 2018

It was a super busy week. Good thing it rained 5 days or I would have wanted to be outside when I had other things that needed to get done. On Monday I went to my sister's house to help her clean it out. She listed it for sale so time to get rid of things she no longer needs or wants. She treated me to lunch for helping her. The above coffee set was a gift she received many years ago. She only used it once as it takes 30 minutes to make a pot and is complicated. She is one person and just uses a pod machine instead. My son however LOVES coffee and was interested in it. She really didn't want to donate it but was happy to let us have it. My son used it the next day and we refrigerated the rest of the coffee. He has used it the rest of the week making himself iced coffees. It was fun it watch it work. It is all about balance. We received lots of goodies from my sister. I also gave away some items to friends that I know could use them. I also dropped a load off to our Church outreach. She still has a lot of stuff to go through.

Tuesday I was not feeling well. Unfortunately I am a mom so I still had things that had to get done. I was supposed to go into work late because YD was getting her braces off. I called out instead. It was a 4 hour shift and I needed sleep more. So YD and I went and got her braces off and then I took her to school late. I came home and passed out on the couch for 2 hours. I was still not great on Wednesday but I pushed through. I am much better now. Allergies stink and then throw in some vertigo. Fun times. YD was given a goodie bag of things she wasn't allowed to eat while she had braces  on. She will get her retainers this week.

Wednesday I had to go to the dentist for a cleaning. I have a cracked filling, so I made an appointment to get that fixed. I was given some items for free.

There is a Stop & Shop near my dentist's office so I stopped in there after my appointment. The meat manger was marking meat down. I love when that happens. I got chicken cutlets for $1.29 a pound. That is a crazy good price for around here. I also got some other marked down items.

Thursday was back to work. We went to the local college that night to look and see what was being thrown away and boy was there a lot. We did great. It was raining lightly so not to bad. We got 8 mini fridges, that my son cleaned out for me. We got a small vacuum that I took apart and cleaned. It works great and had all of it's attachments. It is light enough that YD can carry it upstairs. Our vacuum is heavy and she always needed help. We were hoping to get back another night but the night we wanted to it was pouring rain. Neither one of us wanted to get soaked to the bone so we skipped it. I will be listing most of our finds on Craigslist and put the money towards the college fund.

I was asked to work on Friday because of all of the rain and Deadpool 2 came out. It made up for me calling out on Tuesday.

Saturday was YD Junior Prom. They do a cruise around Manhattan. We had paid for her ticket earlier in the year. She did her own hair, makeup and nails. She wore a pair of OD heals. All I had to buy was the dress. I used a coupon for it. She looked amazing. We have 2 weddings later this year. She can wear it to one or both if she chooses.

Sunday I was asked if I could work. Raining again. So I took the extra shift. It ended up getting nice during the day. Hubby tilled part of my garden that needed it. He then cooked dinner. Isn't he great. So after dinner I planted 50 tomato plants and 50 lettuce seedlings. So happy to have it started.

We ate very well this week. Dinners were pasta with meat sauce, fried chicken cutlets, cheese quesadillas, chicken fajitas, and pancakes. I did get a pizza one night with a $2 off coupon.

We paid bills online, hung laundry on racks, use cloth rags instead of paper towels, combined errands, brought lunch to work. I filled out several surveys, requested 2 free samples and used Ibotta. I added codes to Kellogg too.

We had a busy week but we did get a lot done. We also made some great memories. What did you do this week that was frugal?

  1. You guys are going to eat a lot of great salad when all those tomatoes and lettuce get going. I used to plant 50-75 tomatoes each year, because we were at a higher altitude at our previous property and the soil was poor. So, it took that many to get enough tomatoes to can all I wanted. Now, I'm really hoping the 24 I planted, plus cherry tomatoes, will be enough due to the difference in where I live. My tomatoes did not do well last year, and so am hoping some things I did differently will change that for this year.

I can't believe how much stuff you got from the college clean-out. 8 fridges? 8? That's insane. I hope you make quite a bit on them. Are there quite a few people competing for these excellent trash finds?

    1. That is what I'm working on. Lots of free salads and tomatoes. I only got to plant my Roma tomatoes for sauce. I am going to plant my big boy and cherry tomatoes this week. Good luck with your tomatoes.

We could have taken 20 mini fridges if we had room but we could only fit 8. We did see 2 other people doing the same thing. So much stuff was going to end up in the land fill. I'm hoping they sell on Craigslist to college kids that are going away this August.

  2. Hi Mcoia and everyone and I hope you have had a wonderful week :).

Your YD looks so beautifully elegant in that dress how very special for you and her. You got fantastic bargains and still trying take my jaw off the ground at the price of your local not supermarket honey at $20 a lb, eek, and what a good job you do trading veges for it.

Here is how our week went last week -

    Finances -
    - Banked more money into our saving for our home deposit bank account bringing it to 25.67% of the way there.
    - Made $57.11 from the sale of saved bean seeds and dried sage picked from the gardens and a customer order for 7 curtain tieback cuffs. I banked this to recoup some of our pantry budget we spent on a bulk pantry stock up in February. I now only have $8.47 to make up.
    - Listed 10 more items on eBay using a free listing promotion saving $16.50 on usual listing prices.

    Purchases -

    - Purchased 2 x 36pk of toilet paper, 10 x 10lt food storage containers and coupled those on special with another 20% off voucher on Ebay, 6 deodorants at 53.5% off usual prices, and 10 tins of lychees on 27% off special saving $101.99 on usual supermarket and hardware store prices.

    In the gardens -
    - Picked 5 bunches of silver beet and picked 72g of strawberries from the gardens saving $19.48 over purchasing. We are saving the strawberries and freezing them until we have enough for making strawberry jam.
    - DH dug out the rest of the native lilies from the other side of the house and transplanted it in the newly amended garden bed on the opposite side of the house.

    In the kitchen -
    - Cooked all meals and bread from scratch.
    - Processed garlic leftover from planting 1 part garlic to 2 parts olive oil and froze it to use for future meals. This makes it soft enough to spoon out to use for cooking meals.

    Sewing -
    - Made 7 curtain tiebacks for a customer order and another set of 4 that I listed on the internet.

    Sewingcreations15.
    - Purchased

    1. You had a busy week too. Thank you for you kind words about YD. She had such a wonderful time it was worth the money. I work hard to save so that we can do special things like the Junior Prom.

I have been listing more items too. I forgot to write that I sold 2 items this week. One had 9 bids so I may have priced it on the low side. I will try to list the items I collected this week on Craigslist. My kale is finally going to seed. I let it and will get many plants in the fall for free.

    1. Thank you. Allergies are very interesting. I've never had them this bad this late in the season. I guess with the late cold spell it pushed everything back.
