Shopping for Second Hand Clothes

Hi everyone, this is Oldest Daughter (OD)! My mom recently asked if I would be interested in talking
to you all about my suggestions for second-hand shopping.

I am currently on baby step 2 trying to finish paying off my student loans, so my budget has been
pretty tight since graduation 3 years ago. The first few jobs I worked after graduating required
uniforms which made it pretty easy, but a year ago I started a corporate job and realized I had very
little office attire. I needed to update my wardrobe with business-casual clothes on a very tight budget.

I had shopped at thrift stores when I was in high school, mostly for theater. It was always an easy
place to find costume pieces or the occasional pair of jeans that I wanted to turn into cut-offs.
However, thrift stores can be pretty unpredictable, time consuming, and there just happen to not be
any in my new neighborhood. I started looking for online consignment shops or thrift stores and
stumbled upon Thred Up.

Thred Up has quickly become my favorite place to shop. It is an online thrift store that is incredibly
easy to navigate, affordable, and they have an incredibly easy return policy. My favorite part? You
can even search by the material that the product is made out of. For people like myself who try to
stick to natural fibers, this makes life much easier. It would also be great for vegans who are
specifically looking to avoid animal-made fibers.

Some of my favorite purchases so far have been:

Antonio Melani 100% Linen Blouse. Paid $10.99. Originally $54.00.

Everly 100% Linen Dress. Paid $11.99. Originally $17.00

Old Navy 100% Cotton Chambray Dress. Paid $15.99. Originally $35.00.

New York and Company 100% Cotton Dress. Paid $14.99. Originally $60.00.

The only downside that I can state about Thred Up is that they don’t offer any men’s clothing. My
boyfriend has been really interested in buying second-hand but unfortunately there seems to be far
fewer options for men. They do however carry children’s clothing & maternity clothes.

I also recently attended an event in my neighborhood called Resell IRL. I live in a fairly trendy
neighborhood in Baltimore, so there are several fashion bloggers that live nearby. They decided to get
together and sell some of their clothes that they weren’t wearing anymore. I grabbed a floor length
dress for $15 that I am hoping to wear to an upcoming wedding, and a knee-length cotton dress for
work that has pockets for $20. Both are in great condition. I am hoping to get involved as a seller if
they hold another one of these events, as I have plenty of clothes in my closet from college that I no
longer wear.

Do any of you shop second-hand? Do you prefer shopping second-hand locally or online?

  1. I have nothing against second hand at all. But, I cannot stand to shop. I do not need office clothing, but casual clothes in larger sizes are all worn out. One word of advice...men need to try on clothes because a size in a jacket or pants may not be true because men have dress jackets and pants altered.

    1. I definitely prefer to shop from the comfort of my own home rather than actually going out and shopping. Fortunately with ThredUp they categorize the wear of their clothes, so you can even choose to only look at clothes that still has tags on it!

  2. I really like poshmark, you should try it. I will try threadup!

    1. I have heard such great things about Poshmark! There is just so much stuff on there and so many different sellers it can be overwhelming to me. I always check it out if I have something specific in mind though.
