Adding to my Pantry
I went to Meat Farms to get a few things when we got home. Strawberries were on sale for 99¢ limit 4. Asparagus were on sale $1.99 a pound. Grapes were $1.49 a pound. My total was $14.04.
I cut up 3 containers right away and added them to the freezer. The rest were eaten over the next 2 days.
The garden is doing wonderful. As you can tell, my tomatoes are finally ready. We are really enjoying them. Meals are being worked around what veggies are available.
Can you see that tiny orange pepper at the bottom of the picture? It is a tabasco pepper. Hubby asked me to try growing them so I got 1 plant. There are about 100 green ones on the plant and this one turned orange. We put it in chicken fajitas and man were they spicy. Next time I will only use half of one. I have no clue what I am going to do with them all when they are ready.
More tomatoes. There are so many, I just go out with my big bowl and fill it up. I see sauce happening this weekend. Let the canning begin.
I have a disease. I can find a clearance rack in any store. While we were away I found a few things we could use at home from the clearance rack. There were lots of seltzers so we picket out a bunch of flavors. We did drink some while away.
We also found some spices marked down so I brought them home. The kids also picked out some Herbert Teas that were on sale. There were 3 for $5. They had a $1 off on each one so we loaded up. They are usually $2.99 each by us so I rarely buy them. It is a special treat. YD loves them so she has been very happy. We tried some new flavors. We also got a gallon of dark maple syrup at the farm we went to. We picked 5 pounds of blueberries at a different farm and most of those made it home as well. I froze most of them. All of the food we bought on vacation went into the vacation budget.
I went to Dollar Tree. I feel like I haven't been there in months. With school starting I wanted to get things my son can grab to eat in between his classes. He loves the tuna packs and ramen. I spent $38.14.
I did get back to Meat Farms for more of the strawberries that were on sale for 99¢ each. Grapes were still on sale for $1.49 a pound. Bananas were 39¢ a pound. The apples were 99¢ a pound. I did get cold cuts. Hubby is taking a class 3 days this week and I had jury duty so I wanted easy lunches that we could take. Total was $27.49.
My son is bringing home lots of baked goods from his job. He also got feed twice since he covered other people's shifts that called out.
Our total for the week is $79.67.
How is your garden doing? What were you able to add to your pantry this week? Do you look for clearance racks even when you are on vacation?
"Clearance Rack Disease" is a good one to have. lol
ReplyDeleteMake hot sauce with all those peppers....basically it's just vinegar and peppers.
Thanks. That is what Hubby said too.
DeleteFantastic finds!!!! Do not feel bad - I have the same disease!!!!! LOL Some weeks it is just better for me to stay away - as I am always tempted with clearance!
ReplyDeleteWith the garden producing in full force - we often have meatless nights - which saves a lot. Luckily we both love veggies.
There have been a few of those here too. I grilled a pound of chicken and it lasted us 3 nights between the pizza, fajitas and salads. It is more of a topping then the main course.
DeleteYou bet I do. I have found great deals in the funniest places.
ReplyDeleteMe too.
DeleteOoh, sweet potatoes! That's one thing that doesn't often go on sale where I live, and that makes me sad, because I enjoy them so much.
ReplyDeleteI think I spent just over $60 on groceries this week, which included a bunch of pasta, all different shapes, for 69 cents a pound, fresh broccoli, mandarins, carrots, milk, canned jackfruit, and bananas. One store had a 70-something oz container of laundry detergent on sale for a dollar when you spent $10 in the store (which I was doing anyway), so I grabbed that to add to my laundry room stash. :)
That is a great price for laundry detergent. I would have grabbed it too. $60 is wonderful for a week.
DeleteSweet potatoes go on sale usually in the fall as do all potatoes and corn. We buy lots and them we process them. I can't wait until September for the great sales to start. I buy directly from the farmers.
Ha! I have the same disease. I will buy sweet potatoes for $0.25/lb. in the fall in 40 lb. boxes at the farm. So, I laugh at sale prices in stores. Not only do I get them more cheaply, I know how fresh they are AND the variety as I only eat one variety. How much did you pay for the sweet potatoes per pound?
DeleteYou found some good prices even on vacation.
The sweet potatoes were 69¢ a pound. YD loves sweet potatoes and they don't upset her stomach so I am willing to pay for them when they are higher then regular potatoes. I will get a 25 pound bag in a few weeks at the farm stand. Just waiting.
DeleteI was able to get 2 more handfuls of green beans last night and noticed that the tomatoes are just starting to turn red. More pumpkins are growing and I have 8 in the crawlspace that I will end up giving away (i inherited the garden when we bought the house ) and I don't like pumpkin. Finally cut through a spaghetti squash and cooked up half, will cook up the other half and still have 8 in the crawlspace ripening. I was visiting my Mom last week so didn't go shopping but did pick up sale Diet Coke this week and need to get more (between 2 stores I was only able to pick up 12/2L) also the 20pks are 3.99 limit 2 so I am setting up additional accounts with my various email addresses.
ReplyDeleteYeah for tomatoes turning red. Do you have a dog? I cook up pumpkin for our dog. It is really good for her and I add some to her food. She loves it. That is great that the house came with a garden. I wish ours had. It took me several years to get the soil good. Enjoy the bounty.
DeleteHi Mcoia and you did well and the strawberries are a wonderful find and so healthy for you being packed with vitamin c. Wow so many tomatoes that is fabulous we too were doing the same a while ago and picking a large mixing bowl full a day which we froze and lots we ate fresh too :).
ReplyDeleteWe go shopping here once every 2 - 3 months and small shops in between for some fruit, eggs and dairy. This is the week we did part of our 3 monthly shop at one supermarket online and we will pick it all up today after using 2 x $240 e-vouchers for $200 each.
I have to say we are seriously under our grocery budget after putting aside $691.51 and so far only spending $400 of that budget.
We chose to mainly stock up on the basics we used to date first along with some items we stocked in addition to the normal levels we have in our food storage on specials saving an additional $29 on usual prices which so far are -
- 6 x vanilla beans for making homemade vanilla extract (this costs $15 per 100 ml in the supermarkets and we can make it for $7.68). Strangely I looked for gold plating on the vanilla extract in the shops and found none :).
- 1 x packet of 40 filters for straining the vanilla extract.
- 6 x 250g of cracker biscuits.
- 8 x 100 g packets of cheese twisties for snacks
- 2 x 375 g of dried chick peas.
- 12 x tins of smoked oysters.
- 18 packets of choc chips for cooking.
- 2 x 400 ml bottles of cocoa moisturiser.
Hope everyone has had a great week of stocking their pantries :).

I know vanilla prices have gone crazy. I was reading an article about all of the problems the vanilla farmers were having between floods and people stealing their crops.
