Adding to my Pantry

I have added lots to my pantry the last few weeks.  I got over 100 pounds of potatoes from the farm.

I went to Aldi. YD is trying to eat gluten free to see if it helps her stomach and it has been.

Lots of gluten free and dairy free items from Whole Foods. This was not a cheap trip but that is what happens when you have several people in the family with food issues.

Meat Farms had gluten free pasta on sale and the huge cans of tomatoes.

BJ's was also shopped at multiple times.  Reddi Wip started making almond milk whipped cream. Hubby loves it.

I ran to Stop & Shop for a few freebies and I had a few coupons that were going to expire several times. I can be a sucker for coupons.

I kept getting catalinas for $2 off 6 boxes.

Then someone handed me a  $5 off purchase so I got taco shells and pasta for pennies. I saw a friend and gave her the last catalina for the pasta. She was happy to get cheap pasta too.

I am way over for October. I spent $487.51. My total for the year is $4002.36. I am over by $2.36 for the year. I will have to be very careful. I want to stock up on turkeys in November. I am doing much better this year over all so I am happy about that. I am just trying to see if $400 average a month for us is possible.  I have 2 months to go and they are both holiday months. Wish me luck.

  1. It all looks great. Over or not - you are getting well stocked, which helps in the future. Aldi is really getting lots of gluten free foods. great job!

    1. I love Aldi. They had a few items at ours so we went there first. Then we hit Whole Foods. A few friends have gluten issues so they recommended certain foods. The pancake mix she loved. Since she lives on pancakes and waffles we had to find a good one. Now that we know she likes it I will look on line or at bigger packages to bring the price down.

I am well stocked on pasta and potatoes for a while.

  2. I think you're doing amazing! I hope the no gluten helps your DD, but she can't have the Panera treats.
I got Honeysuckle White turkeys for .49 a pound at a military commissary yesterday. That's the lowest I've seen them in years

    1. Panera actually has a few gluten free items. More and more places are offering them. She does not have a gluten allergy just an intolerance they are calling it. She eats a lot of carbs so we are trying GF and it is making a difference.

49¢ for turkey is great. I am hoping to get it that cheap too. Great job.

  3. Gluten free can be very expensive so I think you are doing well.

  4. Some many good deals! Wondering how you store your potatoes?

    1. My basement isn't finished or heated. I keep them down there. I use the Harvest Gold first since they go soft faster. I took cardboard boxes and layer the potatoes between the newspaper. I check them each week. We will eat lots of potatoes the next few months. My Irish roots love it. If they start sprouting or going soft I will shred them and freeze them for hashbrowns.

I could eat potatoes with every meal if Hubby would let me. I made a potato soup last night. We have had baked potatoes, mashed potatoes, potato and corn fritters, hash browns, home fries and french fries since we bought them.

  5. Looks like you did great at the stores! Gluten free items will definitely take a chunk out of your food budget, especially at first as you build up a stock and test out what's available/good. I hope going gf helps your daughter feel better!

I'm gluten intolerant and my mom is celiac; we've both been eating gluten free for about 8 years now. Things have improved a lot in that time; there are a lot of places to find reasonably priced gf foods these days, and labeling is a lot better, too. I'm not sure if you have Ocean State Job Lot in your area (I'm in central CT, we have quite a few here), but they carry a great assortment of the Bob's Red Mill gluten free products (flours/grains/mixes) at very reasonable prices, and they also have quite a few gf cookies and crackers for much less than the supermarkets. Aldi is good, and I've also found some nice deals on Walmart.com (I use some of my Ibotta rebate $$ for Wal-Mart gift cards, and then stock up on gf lasagne noodles, baking mixes, orzo--things I can't find in regular stores in my area).

I'm a first-time poster, but have been reading your blog for a while and really enjoy it!

    1. Thanks for posting. We do have a Job Lot near by. I will have to check out their prices. Thankfully 2 good friends are GF and recommended some items. YD has liked everything we have gotten so far. I did buy some flour to try to make items at home which will help lower the price. YD was tested for celiac several years ago and it can back negative. They said she had severe reflux. New doctor said she could be gluten intolerant too so we are seeing if this helps.

  6. Hi Mcoia and you did really well and like me you hate being over budget but you did well in stocking up on items that were very cheap :).

I have been through our grocery shopping budget for the year to date and we are under budget by $85.80 or averaging $192.20 per month for a family of 2 and cat food for our cat.

We have added another 10 lt bucket of oats to our storage bringing us to a years supply and I also added a packet of baby wipes to take in the car with us on trips. The rest of the grocery shop was just to catch up on dry goods and cheese we have already used in the home. With our e-voucher discount and weekly specials we saved another $44.94 over usual prices.

As we are moving we are trying not to do any grocery shopping but we needed cheese and since I had an e-voucher discount we used one of those rather than pay full price.

    1. Our budgets are very similar, about $100 a person per month. When we moved, I ate down our pantry so that we didn't have to move so much. Still ended up moving several boxes of food though. Great job on the cheese. Cheese is a must have in our house.
