Front Porch

It was a very busy weekend. We only have a few more weeks until youngest daughter's graduation party at our house. We redid the front porch this weekend. We worked on it until 9 pm Sunday night to get it finished. We love how it came out.

This is a before picture. We had already ripped out the bushes in front. Hubby and my son sanded everything. In retrospect, we should have rented a larger sander. It took them hours with the 2 small sanders that we had. It did the job, it just would have been quicker and easier with a bigger one.

YD and I painted all of the posts. It took 3 coats to get it how I wanted.  Hubby rolled the floor and YD and I did all of the edges. That part went very fast.

We bought new vinyl lattice for the bottom. It was easy to work with and will be easy to clean.

I spray painted the little table that was out there black. It used to be green and needed a new coat anyway. I had the black paint and thought it would look good.

I put 2 chairs that we had in the yard on the porch too. Now I just need to plant flowers in front of the lattice and it will be done.

It took a lot of work but it came out great. This would have cost us several thousand dollars to have someone do it. It cost us about $150 and a weekend.

Did you do any projects this weekend?

  1. Looks lovely. That is a lot of work. Is the picture with cedar shake and no shutters a long time ago, or did you do that too? It sure looks pretty.
My big project was on Thursday - cleaning gutters, which then led to washing house and awnings & drive and car!

    1. We just had the siding done. That is where most of the money from our project fund went this year. Hubby did the new bilco doors for the basement. The siding was too big of a project for us to do ourselves so we paid to have it done. We also had our 2 electric meters converted into one and some outlets and lights added. We are doing all of the smaller projects like the porch and pulling out the front bushes. It all takes time but saves so much money. Next weekend is the side porch. Same thing as the front porch just smaller.

YD and I were washing the fence while Hubby and my son were sanding. It is a big fence so we are doing a little at a time. It will get done. I still need to do the gutters. I might have my son do them since I don't like heights and ladders and he doesn't mind them. Maintaining a house is never ending. I still need to plant half of my garden. It will all get done it just seems like it all needs to be done at the me time.

  2. Your porch looks excellent now!
We need to clean our deck and reseal it. That's going to have to wait until we get back from our trip the end of the month because painting/carpeting the bedroom is happening first.

    1. Thanks. It was really quick and easy to do. I need to repaint the fire pit with the heat paint one day this week. It helps to keep it looking good.

  4. That looks great! Go to a local nursery and see if they have a discount for buying in flats so you can fill in that area. Ask if they have an abundance of a flower that they need to get rid of, if you are buying annuals. Also cheap brick and bark are a great way to dress it up.

    1. Congrats to your son. Flight school sounds very exciting. June is always busy with birthdays and Father's Day. This year we added a wedding and lots of graduations. Every weekend in July is a graduation party.

  6. Everything looks so good and nice and fresh! We have to repaint the deck at the lake this year. I am heeding your advice about a larger sander.

  7. Hi Mcoia and your deck looks fantastic and so clean and fresh and you are right that doing things ourselves where we have skills to do so do save a lot of money over the course of a year :).

We are doing a bit of a maintenance/improvement job ourselves and cleaned out the ceiling cavity and got all of the full wool insulation batts laid in the ceiling cavity. The home is about 5 - 6 oc warmer now we have it mostly covered. Tomorrow we will cut the smaller pieces to fit the gaps. The joys of an older 1910 - 40 build California bungalow is that none of the roof joists are a standard size to fit the sizes of insulation batts currently sold in the shops :).

We are happy with our progress so far :) and it looks great, and have the grazed knuckles, blisters and bruises to prove it.

    Have a great week :).

    1. Thank you. Even though it was a long weekend, it was worth doing it ourselves. We saved so much.
